Shane Hinton

What is your current job and main responsibilities?

I currently work as a meteorologist at KVUE in Austin, TX. I am responsible for our Midday weekday shows in addition to our Weekend Daybreak shows. My additional responsibilities include helping manage our digital platforms and generate content relevant to the forecast and climate for Central Texas. Throughout my career so far, I have covered historic storms such as Hurricane Florence in Eastern North Carolina and the recent winter storms in Central Texas.

Tell us about your MPS internship

My MPS internship was completed at NBC 6 in Miami (WTVJ). I had the privilege of working with the amazing weather team at WTVJ for Summer 2017. This included shadowing a majority of the shifts at the station in addition to updating digital platforms and building weather graphics. This is also where I completed my research project which focused on forecast model accuracy specifically for South Florida regarding various components such as high and low temperatures, wind speed, and precipitation totals. This internship was invaluable to me because I was able to not only discuss but truly experience what my future career would look and feel like. I was able to network with successful professionals within the field and get their personal advice about my career goals.

What were your favorite classes at Rosenstiel School and why?

It's difficult to choose a favorite class in the program, but I'd say my top two were "Broadcast Meteorology" and "Methods for Marine and Atmospheric Education".

What are your favorite Rosenstiel School memories?

In addition to the great times I had during my internship, my most cherished memories at Rosenstiel School were socializing with students in all the various tracks on campus while at Wetlab.

What piece of advice would you give to current or incoming MPS students?

NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. Not only within your track but with students throughout Rosenstiel School . The connections you make at this school are worth more than you'll ever know. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions. The professors at Rosenstiel School want to see you succeed and always welcomed any questions or concerns I had.
